Vinha do Pinto is one of the first plantations of the post-phylloxera generation in the Douro Valley from around 1930. It has more than 30 different grape varieties, which provide for a highly complex wine. It came about after Phylloxera had already devasted the vineyards of Europe in the middle of the 19th Century. A solution to re-starting the vineyards occurred when it was discovered that one could graft surviving European vines, onto American rootstocks, that had already proven resistant to the disease.
